Check where your nearest hotspot is

It's important that any hotspots contribute to growing the Helium network. As a host with us you need to be in a position where an existing hotspot doesn't already fully cover.

Use the Helium explorer below to see where your nearest hotspot is
CHECK YOUR NEAREST HOTSPOT

What am I checking?

These are the things we look for when we are verifying if you're in a good place to be one of our hosts.

No other hotspots within 300m

If an existing hotspot is within 300m we are unlikely to help grow the Helium networks coverage and so unlikely to get the rewards we would both like.

At least 4 hotspots within 2km

The Helium network rewards coverage and so being able to connect to other nearby hotspots helps verify the coverage of the network.

Good line of sight to hotspots

The hotspots connect through LongFi so it's better if the hotspot is higher up and therefore can get uninterrupted line of sight connection to other nearby hotspots.

Good broadband connection

The hotspots give IOT devices access to the wider internet by providing access from the Helium LongFi network onto the wider internet. Only a tiny bandwidth is needed but a reliable broadband connection helps.

A guide to verifying your location

This simple guide will help you verify that the location that you are in is a good location to host a helium hotspot.

First take a look at where your location is in relation to its surroundings, can you see a lot of other buildings from your location or is your view blocked by just those buildings that sit right next to you?

As long as somewhere within your home or premises can see a reasonable distance around you and you're not in a deep valley that would block the signals from other hotspots around you, you should be okay.

Next go to the highest place in your property where there is either a window or good access to say the roof or some other location where the antenna could be placed and look around you. Can you see a fair distance?

Whilst you're stood there think carefully about how far away the main broadband connection for your location is and how you might be able to connect your hotspot to it. The best way to connect to your broadband would be through an ethernet cable, but Wi-Fi will also work.
Generally you will know if you can get a good Wi-Fi signal in the location do you think will be best for the hotspot but I would always suggest that when you provide us with speed test data for your broadband, this is done from as close to the location of your hotspot proposal as possible.
